having an issue with to much oil leaking at the transmission main shaft seal. i can tolerate miner leaks on the old girl but when your coveralls start getting oil soaked from the knee down its time for repair. the books are pretty clear that its not much fun getting the trans apart to get to the seal but i figure some of the hands out there have tackled this before and thought some short cuts mite have been discovered over the years that might be passed on. i have heard of a split seal design used for a fix but that seal is no longer at cat of coarse so it looks like i will be taking the trans apart for seal replacement and i'm sure some bearings and what ever else i might find. i noticed a few more serial numbers ahead cat made a two piece shaft design to make seal repair easy my luck no dice. thanks in advance if anyone can help out. this is a dry clutch 8714 serial# machine

Large front idler requires 40 links.

smaller front idler on an "agg" cat with no blade, or a cat for pulling a scraper, if I remember right. smaller front idler was to help with turning easier? Was some discusion years ago about how an agg cat that had a front blade fitted on it (still had small front idler) was harder to get a level finish cut with a dozer blade. Balance of machine changed a bit to the back with the smaller ilder not holding the front up as much as the large idler. I might be remembering wrong, but someone will corect me. sorry if this thread got highjacked.

I thought the orginal poster asked about a transmission problem, the question about track chains had nothing to do with a transmission that should have been asked in a new post, and the guy still didn't get an answer about the trans.

Aron,
Well your right about where the post should be. But, I think he’s pretty much answer his own question…… can’t get the parts he wants and the SN’s are not compatible with what he’s trying to do anyway.

You’re talking about a tractor that is about 62 years old or so, so it’s not surprising the parts you need/want are not available anymore. One thing you might want to do when you’re in there with the seal repair, is the drain back hole in the bearing cage. A large hole helps keep the oil from leaking out around the top transmission shaft. At one time Cat suggested drilling out the hole to 5/16”, from 3/16”…..if it’s not already drilled out.

The two piece shaft and new cover could only be installed on the D8’s equipped with an oil clutch. The two piece shaft was not adaptable to tractors equipped with dry flywheel clutch, as you already know. Looks like you’re going to have do the seal replacement the hard way. And good luck in doing so.

thanks for reply i figured the hard way was the only way to go , looks like seals and most gaskets are still
supplied for the repair i will check the drain back while i'm in there i thought maybe someone had come up
with possible short cuts during take down and assembly doesn't appear that way though.
