This is my first dozer and I have only had it about 8 weeks, so I am pretty green here. When I purchased it I hand cranked it several times and had no problem getting the pony motor fired up but it has become very difficult to get it started. I don't know why. It already has a starter (no battery) so I have tried to jump start it but am having no luck. The starter kicks in but is not engaging the gear. It says delco 98240 reman inertia dr 6v ccw on the starter. It turns over plenty fast just not engaging. Any ideas on what to do to solve my problem. d8 2u #17234 Thank you

Sounds like some gunk on the "threads" of the bendix not letting the inertia of the motor throw it out. Or sometimes they will wedge in the retracted position if the last time it was started the engine kicked a little and threw the bendix back with force.

Just pull the starter off and clean the threads on the bendix or unjam it if it's stuck. If it sticks again replace the bendix or the whole starter.

Crossed is talking about the pony starter, it is 6v. The gear engagement is manual with the lever that pushes the gear into the ring gear and goes on to contact the starter switch. Remove the whole starter assembly by removing 4 3/8 bolts mounting it on top of the pony clutch housing. When turned upsidedown it should be obvious what the problem is. I may have parts to fix it.

take just the starter off its housing and investigate the bendix. bench check it to see if the bendix to pop out. teeth could be stripped off if not adjusted correctly when it was installed. good luck.

It does have the lever to engage it. When looking at it you move the lever to the right towards the starter. I am guessing the bendix has to pop out to the left to engage the ring gear? Or does the ring gear move towards the starter when you move the lever?

I'd be on the look out for a broken bendix drive spring.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
