I have this old D8 2U s/n 6481, it starts and runs pretty good but I'm worried about the rails. I think they are p/n 2h953-54 if they are they should be 4.75" tall and 7.98" pitch but these are only 4" tall and 8.25" pitch. The pins and bushings don't look like they have ever been turned so I'm guessing I could turn them and fix the pitch??? But what about the rail height? The rails look like they are getting ready to break to me. I'm not looking to make this tractor perfect, just want to clear some trees, move some rocks and build a pond. The terrain is very rocky with a lot of trees.

So here's what I'm trying to decide

-Are the rails worth welding up and turning the pins and bushings?
-Or should I try to find some better used track chains? Where do look? I don't have a lot of money to invest in this old tractor.
-Or does it even make economical sense to fix it?

Boy, those are not good to put it lightly and someone has put the pads on backwards or swapped sides to try to get more wear out of the bushings. See where the bottom rollers have been hitting the pin bosses on the rails? You can cut some of the flange off of the rollers.

I think you should try to source some used ones, as someone has already run them to destruction.

You might be able to buy a complete parts tractor for what someone wants for the rails, but it depends on where you're located and how patient you are. Try Ebay, Craigslist, and here for sources.

You don't say what the bushings look like? Turned already? Worn badly one side and not turned?

While it's possible to weld up the bottom of the links and the rollers, (Eddie B, reposted some of that information recently), your bushings must be thick enough to make it worth while even if you are willing to work for free.😆

The old spec for 2H953 & 954 was a rail height of 4.75 in. new and 4.38 in. 100% worn. Original pitch 8.00 in.

Turning bushings is something you do at 1/2 worn condition, not for recovering 100%+ worn rails.

I'm surprised your rails are even holding together in that state.

Ok thanks for the replies.

It sounds like I need to replace the undercarriage if I'm going to use this dozer.

There is a complete used undercarriage for a D8K near me, does anyone know if any of those parts would be of any use to me?

Guess I'm still looking then... Thanks, I'd been googling for that pitch for an hour and still hadn't found it!!

Do you know of any other tractors that had compatable undercarriage components with the D8 2U?

It has been already stated of a sort, the pads are on the chains the correct way, the tracks are fitted to the tractor back to front, the old style Hunting Tooth is a Classic feature of these old tractors that adds to the looks and class of the "Old CAT"

General Gear may have a set of chains and pads.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
