I have a cat D8-2u dozer that has a MAJOR leak in the trans. I can get about 15minutes to 30 minutes before the trans starts howling. It appears it to be leaking out the front input shaft of trans. My Brother seems to think it leaks out the right rear drive sprocket, and the finals. To tear into this is a really huge undertaking. I have good mechanical skills and have a newer 580 backhoe to use as a hoist. Also this tractor has never had 3rd gear working. It won't go into gear at all, tried everything. Seems like the shaft is froze up. Just grinds when at idle with clutch pushed all the way forward. Question is can this (oil leak) be fixed through the top of the trans (input shaft) or am I going to have to tear the back half of the tractor apart to replace the seals. And if it comes to that I might as well replace all final drives seals and trans seals. WHAT A BIG JOB!!!!!!!!!!! Any ideas????

In my experience, usually if a seal is leaking it is caused by a bearing gone bad.

what is serial # earlier 2Us have a one piece shaft that means it needs to be removed from the tractor to change seal, you do not need to touch the finals for this but it is a bit of a project, a service book will give you step by step. midway threw the 2Us they changed the shaft and the flange can be removed to change the seal without taking trans apart

The tractor ser# 199335 I Believe the oil leak is the front input shaft of the trans as most of the oil is coming from the front of the trans. Does anybody know if I can still buy the seals? Not looking forward to doing this job. I remember replacing the clutch and thermoids and it was a big job. The dozer does not have a canopy so its hard to remove those heavy parts. Also I know the bearings are good shape, No slop or noises.

THANKS STEVE

Hi Team,
Service Bulletin (Track Type Tractors) Feb 21 1955, tells us that the two piece upper shaft was fitted standard from 13A 3234 and up and was adaptable to the D8 2U 21513 and up, and earlier 13A 1 and up tractors, also to 2U 5307 and up tractors that have been field fitted with oil clutches.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

After reading all the threads from TIREDDOZER, I'm 99% sure this is my Brother. That being the case the Real Serial # of this D8 is 2U12593

Hi OM,
S/No 2U 21,513 and up is correct as per the article. Yes, right at the end of production and Service Magazine, June 30 1953, announces that oil clutches are fitted standard from S/No 2U 21,513 and up.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi edb,
It's that 199335 s/n that I was questioning, not your service bulletin article.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
