In older Military weapons, long term storage of magazines with ammunition in them tended to make the spring take a set in the compressed position, hence not feeding well.
Consequently we were taught to not store magazines loaded for long periods.
Hence by tying the levers back, you may weaken the springs by storing it long term?????
What is long term anyways???
I would say take the drain plugs out if it is dry clutches to drain any condensation out, then drill 1/4" holes in the plugs and screw them back in.
This may totally be wrong information as I have not had to deal with steering clutch issues on a D8. (My Disclaimer)

You will have a job to successfully tie them back any way since they have a hydraulic booster, Dry store and lift the brake adjuster covers for ventilation.

You could always put some silica gel packets in the chambers and close them up. Dehydrate the packets periodically

Hi, Boots.
If you are worried about the plates sticking together in the long-term storage, I would suggest taking the adjustment covers of the back end and bolting some brass or stainless insect screen over the openings to keep 'visitors' out. (Put the covers somewhere safe AND write yourself a note about where you put them. LOL.)

You could also remove the drain plugs in the bottom, drill them with around a 1/4" hole and put a slightly smaller split pin in the hole. When you do start it up working it again, the movement of the split pins in the holes will help to keep them open and effective as drain holes.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
