Negative ground on every CAT I know of.
With charging system inoperative it will not matter which way you connect it

Thanks I will let you know if starts, last fall even the pony started up with no problems.
I have a 933C with 6 volt poney start pos. ground and the generator works. The D4D and 955H are 24 volt neg. ground.
Starter doesn't care what the polarity is. A neg. ground generator will charge on a positive ground if you reverse the poles by reversing the normal polarizing.
I agree. Polarize generator before starting engine after installing battery, regulator, generator etc or after long period of inactivity and you will have no problems. Fail to polarize after swapping polarity of battery or generator and you will probably burn out the contacts in the regulator the first time you start the engine.
If you have an alternator or a solid state regulator, correct polarity is VERY important and cannot be swapped without changing the diodes.
My signature line should give a clue about the Jersey part. I am located in West central Alabama. Not too many of us down here, but a new guy popped up a few weeks ago. Not sure if the yellow disease has taken hold yet, some don't get the persistent form of it.
