Hello All
I am trying to find a parts manual for the No. 29 rear cable controls on my D8. The serial number is 56E131 but all the manuals on ebay are for 56C1 and up. Does anyone know if there is much difference between the 56E and 56C series?

Also does anyone know where to find the serial number on the older style No. 8 multi shank ripper? This is the style;

Not familiar with the 56E designation in the US. Might be an Aussie designation?
Ripper tag should be on the RH upper 1/3 of the cylinder support, out board side.
Also check the RH end of the ripper bar.
I'm just guessing but I believe it's a 63Cxxxx ripper.

Thanks OM. I am pretty sure there are no tags in either of those locations so I guess they have been torn off. I will take a closer look in those areas and hopefully it will be stamped into the steel. There is a 63C1 and up book on ebay and a page is shown showing the ripper and frame and neither the ripper tooth nor the clevis assembly look right but maybe there are different versions in the same book.

Thanks OM, the books on ebay show the right one now. Is the hydraulic pump and valving in the ripper book or is that a separate serial number and book?

Looked further into the #29 CCU, 56C,31E (for the early 15A) and 83F all appear to be pretty much the same.
I wonder if your unit got miss stamped?

On the ripper, is that a two valve control? Ripper and tilt cylinder? and yes the hydraulics will be a separate book.
Looks like some swapping has been done there as the original match for the ripper on an early 15A used the #48 Hydraulic Control (sort of a version of the #44) mounted on the back of the tractor between the ripper uprights. What you have appears to be a #182 (2-valve) Hydraulic Control which came later on 35A, 36A, 46A D8's.

Hello OM
Thanks for researching the CCU.
As for the rippers, sorry OM that photo is not of my machine. It is a similar one that I found on google. Below is my machine. As you can see the rippers are in a bad way. Some hoses are perished and fallen off, although you cannot see it the cylinder on the left side has been removed as it has a bent shaft. The ripper bar was removed as it was chained up and one day the chain broke allowing the ripper bar to drop to the ground so they decided to remove it. The machine was used as a logging dozer for many years and the ripper and CCU took a hammering from logs. I am fairly sure the valve is only single spool. The oil tank is in the same place as the one in the first pic.

WOW! That's not much to work with. Are there any numbers on your hydraulic tank and do you have the required pump mounted? There is a #181 Hydraulic Control with single valve but it's usually only used with blade tilt and again it would have been used on the 35, 36,46A D8's.
Here is a picture of a unit with the #48 Hydraulic Control that would be correct for the early 15A's either single or double valve with pump built in.

Hello OM
I will have to get out to the machine and take some more pictures and look for some tags. The oil tank is on the fender above the track. As far as I know there is only one control valve. The blade is angle and tilt but it is all manual. I think the pump is mounted on the front of the engine but I will have to confirm that. In all the pictures that I have seen in the manuals and on google and the one you posted, none of them have the hydraulic hose configuration that mine has.
The configuration in the pic you show would not work on mine as it has the rear mounted CCU. Maybe this is a custom job because of the CCU?

This is the same machine that has a leaking seal in the torque convertor that is that bad it is throwing diesel up through the floor.

The #181 & #182 Hydraulic Control original pump location is the pto auxiliary drive at the RH rear of the engine. In your case it will be next to the #29 CCU drive.

Hello OM
I don't think this is a Cat hydraulic system. The valve has Hydreco on the label and there is no label on the oil tank although it does have a Cat cap. The hydraulic pump is definitely mounted to the front of the engine.

I am fairly sure the rippers were built by Cat. If not then they copied the Cat design. There is no number stamped on the cylinder support. The ripper bar is not nearby at the moment so I have not checked on it for a number.

Really quality installation of the hoses. Just look at the routing from the pump to the tank.

The serial number on the rear of the machine is 15A2723 but there is no serial number at all on the engine block. There is a number stamped in the top of the block near where the serial number tag should be and I think it reads 541. The 4 has not been stamped properly. Does this mean the block has been replaced by a new one from Cat? If it was a complete new engine from Cat wouldn't it have a full serial number

She needs some work but it does start and run. Canopy is rusting away.
