I have a D8 14A with dry steering clutches and brakes. When tested at purchase, it seemed to work fairly well and appeared to need adjusting of the left side but pushed good with an angle blade. After getting it home I found the steering compartments more than half full of rusty sand. I cleaned both sides, adjusted and set out for a project. Within 3 hundred yards the left track quit working, wouldn't steer and just free rolled. Using the angle blade for resistance and the right friction to steer I could still use the tractor. Getting home I tore into it, replaced both brakes, most of the plates, all springs and bolts on the left side. The right works fine. Reassembled according to the manual. This time the steering won't release, pushes fine. I can adjust till I have no more and the forks go completely in with no pressure. Don't understand how this can be and not release the plates. Linkage works fine and I also removed the booster for cleaning and inspection. I've continued to do allot of work with it, just using the right to steer and it pushes fine. I appreciate any thoughts before I tear into it again. I've found allot of good information on the website and thank you all for the help.

Check for lateral movement of the steering clutch cross shaft. Worn bearings will allow movement to the left which extends the reach required to release the left steering clutch. RH movement is limited by the bevel gear.

edit:
I meant to say bevel gear cross shaft.

Thank you OM, I ‘ll Check but don’t remember any side play, and the cross goes deep into the drum without resistance. I can’t see how the pressure plate could be so far in and not release the plates.

While not sure about 14A. Earlier 8's have an adjustable bottom anchor point for the yoke with a bolt through the bottom of the case to secure it. If this is not adjusted correctly it will give the symptoms you describe.

Hi Team,
suggest to re-adjust the steering clutch linkages again as described in the Grey Operation and Maintenance Instruction Book, mine is Form No 31390, Dated 3-55.
When I have time I will scan and post if you do not have these instructions.

Of importance is the free travel in the operators steer levers as these can be way out if the rubber bumpers for the lever stops are crushed--deteriorated.
I do not have a 14A Service Manual for procedure to check/adjust if the booster internal levers have free play to the actuator pistons.
Somewhere to start.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I want to thank everyone for the help. I tore my Achilles tendon in half awhile ago so it's slowed thing considerably but I'll try and check everything by the end of the week.
