I finally got some cable so I could get my D8 going again. I got it all threaded thru and needed to start the machine to finish getting cable on and lift the blade. The pony starts really well but Ive been having to hold the clutch lever against the clutch as it would not "cam over" when I was trying to get the diesel started. I got it spinning but then the little "blocks "(#2H4819) that the lever uses to push the collar into the clutch broke off(perhaps one was broken already) and now I cannot engage the clutch. From looking at the manual it looks like Im going to have to pull the pony engine and seperate the pony transmission from the engine to get at the clutch. Anybody know where I can get 2 new Blocks(2H4819) and new collar (7H606)? I was pushing the lever hard when the blocks broke and the fork damaged the little knob you pull to adjust the clutch(2A3670) I can probably make it work but could use a new one of those as well. I dont like the idea of doing this in the field but I cant push start it very easily with the blade blocked up and cable installation not finished. Did this happen because the clutch was not adjusted properly(it wouldnt cam over)? It was a frustrating day...

Probably did need to adjust the clutch. Folks usually get into trouble holding the pinion in engagement with the flywheel instead of the clutch..

Have you tried the CAT dealer? It's amazing what they have still for old equipment. Other than that, maybe someone on here can come up with some. Or a decent machinist make a couple.

Pulling the side mount pony motor is made easier by having the correct lifting brackets. Do you have a serviceman's reference book? I'm guessing you need to pull the whole unit and then disassemble it instead of trying to take off just the engine, but maybe someone else knows for sure.

On the push starting (or pull). If it would be more convenient to move the tractor to the shop, but you don't have something big to push or pull it with, I would lay down some timbers under each side of the blade and chain them to the push arms so they will come along with the tractor as it moves. It would be helpful if the rear end of each skid is held off the ground so it doesn't dig in. Then put it in reverse and pull or push it backwards . Should be a pretty easy start without the dozer dragging in the dirt. Once you get it started, you can finish the cable replacement and then lift the dozer to travel to the shop.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Are there any other parts that should be replaced while I have the pony off? Gemdozer, if you have the parts, what is the cost and how long does it take to get them to zip code 68651 in Nebraska USA? Thanks, Ross

I got the clutch adjusted properly(had a tough time getting the spider assembly to turn) and was able to make the clutch go over center and start the pony while engaged to the diesel(in decompression mode) Im going to keep using the machine like this and pull the pony motor this winter when I have time to work on it. Gemdozer was able to find all the parts I need to repair my mistakes.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
