Hello! Many of you helped me with my dozer a little while ago with the pony motor. I am in need of a starter for the pony motor and some help with understanding the circuitry of the electrical system/generator. We had figured out that the pony motor was likely off of a D8H not a 14A but I assume that the starter is still the same 6V starter and was not changed out to a 12V starter that the D8H has. The numbers I can find on the starter that were from the forging/casting are 1942941. The "1's" could just be brackets possibly as they are just straight lines. Those numbers were located on the top of the starter right close to the mounting bolts. It is a 9 tooth counter clockwise rotating drive.

Any help with this would be great!

Hmm. Ok Thanks for that information. Same number on the front nose then. I assume this starter on my unit is 6V as the generator is 6V. Do you know if it is positive ground or not?

This is an opinion for sure but I would think that would be something a starter shop would fix and not even ask what it came off. It is possible Brillman might have a replacement. Good luck sir

Gemdozer, Would you know if it is possible to have a 12v generator? After looking at this dozer I am starting to wonder if someone punched the wrong serial number in the rear casting after the serial number tag fell off. I finally noticed the dozer does have some very faded stickers on the sides that look original that say D8H so I guess I am wondering if this machine is supposed to be 12V? The shop I took the starter and generator to said 6V for the generator for sure.

Does anyone have anymore advise on this unit or answers for these questions?

My understanding is Cat had some 12 volt systems in use back when 6 volt was the standard voltage. Even if nothing is stamped on the tag on your generator, if a Delco, black tag 6 V red tag 12V.

Ok Thanks Ray. We don't see any tags on it red or black unfortunately. It just has stamped numbers on it. I was having trouble coming up with what machine I am even working on as it looks like the serial number on the machine was punched in but I am not sure it is correct anymore. I believe my machine is an early D8H as it does have what looks like original D8H stickers on the side very faded though but the serial number is punched into the rear frame as a 14A. Do you know if the D8H machines ran a 6V system yet? Maybe the early built ones?

Would anyone have a wiring schematic for the generator/charging system? Also, would anyone know if this is supposed to be a positive ground or not?
