I need to replace the cable on my D8. The manual calls for 1/2 inch 6x9 filler wire, right Lang lay, independent wire rope center, preformed, improved plow steel type. Im not sure where to get it. A lot has changed since 1956, is this still the best cable to use for this application? I called fastenal and the closest thing they had was 6x19 ips iwrc. Thanks, Ross/Nebraska

That may be as close as your going to get but I'd try contacting a company that specializes in wire rope. Out here I do business with West Coast Wire Rope (www.wcwr.com)

I used to get a lot of good used cable off of cranes that hung steel. Also used cable from elevators....they have to change the cables out if they show any wear.

It's usually not the proper cable but if it's dirt cheap and last almost as long, what the heck.

I'd pass on the elevator rope, they usually have a fiber rope center.

Thats a 1953 model, production ending at s/n 2U23,537 that same year.

If your in that deep you better get some manuals and study up.

The entire cross shaft assembly, both steering clutches and bevel gear are removed as an assembly for repairs, usually the brake bands are left in place and removed as part of the assembly.

ebay is your friend. Manuals are usually available. There are manuals for parts, owners and light maintenence, and a service manual which has in depth info on repairs.

I agree with 3T. Stop by a local contractor that has cranes. If they don't have cable to give away they will certainly know the local chain and cable supplier.
