Normally wired 24v.
Here is a wiring diagram that should help.
Not aware of any 12v glow plugs for this application.

Perfect diagram. I can go off of that, thanks!
Don't know on glow plugs, maybe 12V gets them half as hot? Wonder if letting them heat a little longer would help.

On a separate note I remember someone touting an aftermarket source for first rate replacement seats. Can someone help me with that? Mine is completely shot.

There is an ad in your magazine for the reproduction seats.

To start ,your going to need 2-8D batteries ,hooked up in series to produce 24 volts from 2- 12 volt 8D batteries, that is positive to stasrterfrist battery, negative, frist battery to positive of 2nd battery ,and negative of 2nd battery to a disconnect switch usually installed under the seat to a ground ,you need a battery box to install the 2-8D batteries side by side .Check to see if you have a 24 volt altnator

If I remember correctly, glow plugs running on half normal voltage will put out about 1/4 of the heat they should. So, it will take LONG preheat times, but the amperage will be low enough that the battery will deliver the current for that length of time. Problem may be that the loss into the surrounding water jacket etc may outstrip the heat production.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks. I found the seat guy, Hahn.
Will wait and see how glow plugs do on 12V in a warm climate.

I got to thinking about this as it isn't the first time it's came up.

It might be worth making a junction somewhere so you can access your existing 12V glow plug lead and connect to another battery to make the 24V to your glow plugs only when you absolutely had to have it, like when it got really cold.

I may see how it starts this winter and come back for help if it is lacking.

Hi
12 volt glow plugs were available in some of the truck engines 1673 / 1674 / 1693 which had series parrallel switches, i.e. 12 volts system
with 24 volt start.

Therefore I believe the 12 volt glow plugs part numbers were [B]1P7912 or 6N0981 but these number proberbly will supersed to later numbers.
These numbers are from 1693 65B serial number.

Checked the 24V number between D343 and D342 and were same therefore believe the 12volts plugs should suit.

You should check with your local CAT dealer.

Best regards

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
