My old dear on a cold winters morning is not good to start. Won't happen without aerostart. I just read on here that you can buy precombustion chambers with glow plugs in them. I have a 24v electric start setup in my E. Does anybody know where i can buy a set of these with all the wiring? All this sounds to good to be true!!

Try Hastings they should still be able to supply new genuine parts, if my memory is ok D8H, D8K and D7E all take the same precoms etc.

Alternatively talk to Tillys, they may even have good 2nd hand.

By the book numbers the 2P0484 pre-combustion chambers and 3T9562 glow plugs work but I could never get anyone that has converted to verify how they fit.

As far as the wiring harness, you will have to construct your own as I am not aware of anyone selling them for the D339.

Mine(D7E) had been converted to glow plugs and direct start. I remember the glow plug number being 3T9562, but I don't recall the precombustion chamber part number.

I do know that I bought one from Heavy Quip in Dallas. Of course it was aftermarket. I don't like the aftermarket ones because you have to remove the glow plug to torque down the injector retaining nut using a socket. The glow plug on a Caterpillar precombustion chamber is over closer to the edge, almost on it, and allows a socket.

Here's a picture of the after market 2P0484. Don't think you could get much closer to the edge with the glow plug. D9gdon, does this look familiar?

Hi au7edd , Paul Moore in Toowoomba has them in stock both new and SH I think He said. PH 0402071589 . Glow plugs he probably has and he is sure You can still buy Harness if not Make Your own .DON"T forget to buy The different Seal Washers as You Need to have Glow Plug sitting at Bottom so you can get your wires on . I don't recall the Numbers but there is 3 or 4 different ones . Changed a D7 D17A over to Electric many years ago and Used D8 Chambers for it .Will also need a Two way Switch Heat/ Start as Well. LJ

Old Magnet,

Yes it looks like the aftermarket ones. I seem to remember that the Caterpillar glow plug hole is over closer to the edge or right on it because they are drilled at a slight angle which puts them out of the way of a socket as I mentioned earlier.

Had a chat with Lance this morning, he suffers brain fade the same as me, you will need to get the glow plugs as near to the 12 o'clock position or at least in that quadrant nearest the tappet cover. I don't have a workshop manual anymore or I could give you the position the glow plug should be in when you test just finger tight with the precom. You need to test first without 'O' ring on pre comb, I think with the correct washer the glow plug should be at about 8 or 9 o'clock before torqueing up, try different washers until that happens, then fit 'O' ring and torque precom, glow plug should then finish in that top quadrant. Further from the exhaust manifold is best. It is over 20 years since I did a head etc, maybe OM can give you a copy of procedure. You wont need a lot of heat in Qld to get engine to fire, about 60 seconds for D8's in the Snowy Mountains in winter.

My D7E service manual does not show a procedure for indexing glow plug chambers. Would have to go to the D8 36A/46A service manual for procedure if that would work. Shows glo plug in the 7:30 to 9:30 clock position.

Also looked up the build list for direct electric start and pre-comb chamber indexing gaskets/shims, are not listed for the D7E.

Also found the glow plug lead assembly part number 7S3726.

Yeah that glow plug lead assembly is going to be hard to find...I never did. I'm sure they're out there, but most wrecking yards aren't going to want to look for it unless you're buying lots of parts from them.
