I recently purchased a d7e serial 47a5030 that has been sitting for a while and need some advise. I just ordered a manual but would like to get a head start on it. I wanted to start by changing the air filter, oil and oil filter since I do not know when it was last done. Can the oil be changed without dropping the belly pan? Will 30wt old work and does anyone have a part number / brand they recommend?
I do have a track that seems to have a pin or two seized up, any ideas on how to free them? I tried pb blaster and diesel but neither worked. I do have a little blue smoke out of the exhaust at all rpm's, is anything I should look for? This machine did have a recent overhaul and has great oil pressure. Oh and any idea what year this thing is, I was told a 1968 but I'm not sure...

Thank you!

If it had a recent o'haul, it's probably time to retorque the head bolts and readjust the valves. As far as the little blue smoke at all rpm's, get something that will put a good load on the engine for a couple hours. Could be the rings aren't fully seated yet so loading the engine up will probably help with the smoke. These engines are designed to work, not idle for extended periods.

Or, a couple spoonfulls of Bon Ami gently and slowly trickled into the intake might also help seat the rings.

according to iron record, it is a 1968 year build
any name brand 30wt diesel oil is fine--
usually all belly pans have a provision to get to the oil drain plug

Welcome aboard burtoml. Yes the oil can be changed without removing the bellypan. You will need 3 books for your D7E, the first picture attached shows the manuals for D7E 47A1 through 47A3395. you will need 47A3396 UP. These books are often available on ebay or on the For Sale/Wanted page here. The most important one for you is the Operation And Maintenance Instructions book, the 47A1-UP will work if you can't find the later book. This little gray book gives the information that the Service Manual doesn't.
You will also need a special a drain plug socket. You can make one by welding a nut to a bolt or buy one from your Caterpillar dealer for about $30. P/N 212-8146 (The second and third pictures attached)
