My D7E Ser#48A7052 arrived last week. I knew it had some head trouble when I bought it. The previous owner said that it started blowing water out of the turbo and had attempted to fix it. After a short Q&A, my suspicions were confirmed that they just had enough of spending money with no real results in fixing the problem. They removed and replaced the reworked heads TWICE!(Same heads just rebuilt) Anyway, we were able to get the pony started. The diesel block is stuck so we've got some work to do there. We moved straight on to removing the heads since we couldn't turn the big motor.(Decomp open of course) The intake and cylinders were full of water from the head trouble. Upon removing the heads, we noticed that the gaskets looked good. Also, both heads have all new parts assembled in them. The next day, my dad cleaned the heads good and waited for them to dry out from the hot Georgia sun. We generally do this just so we might have an idea as to whether it's even worth the trouble to have the head shop pressure test. Upon quick inspection, he noticed cracks around the PC chambers in the same spot on both heads for #2 and #4. So, in searching for replacement heads, I notice that there appear to be two different casting #'s available. Mine are 1M2960. I see a lot of heads online that seem to cross to a 4N7000. Any body have a clue as to why there are two different casting #'s? Did CAT find a lot of cracked 1M2960's? I'm currently shopping for availability and cost vs. repairing these heads. But, I don't want to just repair heads that were inferior in the first place. Thoughts? Thanks, Zane

All I can tell you is head 1M2960 crosses to head assembly 7M2023 and 4S7464. 4N7000 is too new of a number for my books.

I have also seen the 7M2023 on 1 or 2 websites. The 4N7000 seems to be everywhere. I'll be talking to our head shop shortly to see if they know someone locally who can repair the ones I have. When I called War Parts And Equipment yesterday, they didn't have any in stock. However, if it helps anyone, they mentioned that Diesel Cast Welding in Blaine, MN could do a good job with them. I called them and they offer a 1yr warranty on their work with all new parts; quoted 1k$ each. I didn't think that was too bad. I just hate to pay big bucks to ship them 1300 miles.

Thanks for the info, Zane

Where are you located. If not in to big of a hurry maybe someone can bring them to the national show in Edgerton, Wi. I could get them to the shop from there.

4N7000 is the latest head for the D339. It is an after market unit and can be had loaded or bare. Loaded price at Regal is $1,234.01. I don't know anything about the quality or feed back from users. You could also try "Off Road Equipment" for a competitive bid.

www.locknstitch.com is worth a look too, these guys seem to have the market cornered on mechanical repair of cracked cast like this. Also not a cheap date though.
