A few days ago,I was out doing some clearing and I broke the fan belt for my alternator. No visible numbers on the belt, so I wrap the old one around to verify that it would still reach, and it did. I went to the auto parts store, and got a replacement. The length was a match for AP55 Dayco. Now I'm out here trying to get the new belt on, and I can't get it to stretch around the fan. For someone that has done this before, does the fan have to come off to get this belt on? I've taken the 6 bolts out of the fan, but it won't budge... not even with a hammer. Am I trying to put too short of a belt on?? I need help!!

That may not be a fit. Cat belt shows 59.27" outer circumference. Dayco shows 58.77" for a 17585 replacement for the Cat 2S9778

Magnet, if I ever get the chance to shake your hand, I'd happily do it and buy you lunch. Though you probaby dont know, you have helped me more than once, in forums that I've not only posted, but forums that I've researched in the past that you have replied to. If I had a fraction of the knowledge that you have about these old Cats, I'd consider myself an expert. Thank you so much! And FWIW, this belt that I bought had a hand written notation on the cartridge that said "57". That 2.75" in difference should be enough "hopefully" to get it stretched over the fan.
Thanks again!

9L2248 works on generator on my 47A. Just replaced it last week. Alternator could have different pulley and belt.

My generator swings in an arc towards fan and gives plenty of slack for installing. Fan drive belts must be removed to access.

Must be something in the air in Texas! My drive belts are on the engine side of my alternator belt. Were you able to slide the alternator belt over the fan? My alternator also swings in a big arch as well.

No I just took the drive belts off.

You ought to be able to get the drive belts off the fan pulley by prying on the idler pulley then you can put the alternator belt on in style, then put drive belts back in place.

?????Fan drive belts are separate with their own tensioner. Generator belt is different than alternator belt. Either one is tensioned at the generator/alternator itself and independent of the fan drive and tensioner.
Alternator/generator belt is closest to the fan, right size should pass over the fan.

The fan trick is neat, didn't know of it. My taking the drive belts off to allow access to front groove may seem like extra work, but it's really good practice!

Seriously, a limb worked its way into the running belts and gotched up a drive belt and gen belt, so they all had to come off. I've never replaced just a gen belt but am glad to know the procedure.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
