Just bought this monster with the biggest winch I have ever seen. It is a D7D 17A cable blade whistler built in 1960 and has not run for a couple of years due to pilot motor issues. At least every orifice was covered and when last it ran everything was allegedly okay. I got it for just above scrap value and way below market value. It also comes with a spare good track and chain and new PCU friction discs. So if all else fails I should be able to cover costs.

The 7 has only had 2 local owners since new and needs some TLC. The last owner nearly lost it over a cliff but was able to winch it back eventually after first snapping a 1.5 inch cable! He also said that the enighbours complained that when he ran it their houses shook due to the underlying sandstone vibrating!

He showed us some of the work it had done including cutting tracks with 30 foot embankments and big dams too. He also has a couple of nice Olivers which might be for sale.

Can't wait to get the D7 going after which I have to work out how to get it home. I don't think the Landrover will tow it😊

Looks like you have an interesting project ahead. The canopy on the machine is unique. I don't believe I have ever seen one made out of rolled I beam before. Looking forward to updates.

is that a hyster D8N winch that's been modified to bolt onto that D7; if so yes she would have some power alright. they actually have 2 speeds to winch with, hi and low. that's what made them so great

Yes Merv well spotted, I had not noticed in the gloom when first looking at it but I just took possession and checked and it is a D8N winch with two speeds.

Allegedly it has dragged trees weighing over 20 tonnes with some ease being 6' in the base and 100' long - but I guess that might be like the fish that got away. The seller also claims to have been offered 5k just for the winch and 5k for the motor but the old feller wanted it to go intact to a good home - one with a 'son' to take it on as a project because his 3 sons were not interested. How sad😞

PS my son is only interested in driving it and not paying for its salvation😊

More pics to follow when we clear all the junk off it and examine the pilot motor issues etc.

Yes I believe these were made locally by the Cat dealer and were built to suit the Tasmanian logging conditions where giant trees once prevailed and indeed many loggers have been killed by 'widow makers' that is limbs lodged high in the canopy often falling like spears as a result of machinery vibration and/or weather and wind changes which might not be detected on the ground. One had fallen on a machine I looked at some time ago and it had penetrated thick plate steel just missing the driver! And of course the winch cable present a major risk should it snap - as has happened and left a visible crease in the roof where is whipped back and over the top!!

They are completely different to the scrub canopies used in say Queensland which appear to be designed more for shade.

In any event there's plenty of steel in them😊

PS the old feller is suggesting that we can drag the D7 out from the junk heap and up a steep slope with an old Oliver dozer that has a serious knock in the engine. Somehow I don't think so😊 I think we'll wait to get the engines running.

what a machine I have seen those canopys before (not up here I reckon it was down in the Otways were I grew up) made out of RSJ's if you need parts for the pilot motor let me no I have my old one of my 3T it ran fine until the mixture screw fell out of the carby one day so if you need something for it let me no if it fits the post I'll send down
should be a great machine when you get going 👍

bit of an update.

Things are looking good with the pilot motor turning over easily by hand cranking.

The problem appears to be a broken carbon brush inside the magneto cap which we will replace tonight.

The carby looks fine and the pilot motor fuel tank is a little rusty inside but no water in it.

Many thanks for the offer on parts - muchly appreciated.

Hopefully we can fire her up tomorrow.

G,Day inter674 & Paul.
Good luck with the 17A Looks to be a good find .Others will correct me if I am wrong , My under standing is that few parts will swap between a
3T pilot motor & a 17 A.
Paul we must be following each other around as I went to school at Winchelsea just north of the otways you mentioned.
Then lived near Moulamein & Wakool . I recall you lived near Kerang before seeing the light & moving to Queensland.
I can recall hearing a story about a D7 lost in a gully near Forest in the Otways. Don't know if this was a myth or not.
Could it still be there.

Andrew your on the ball mate those pilot motors are different anyway as my old pilot motor spends its days underneath a mango tree I thought it might be handy for someone
It wouldnt surprise me about anything being left in the Otways there was all the old steam winchs and steam engines for sawmills trucks tractors and all sorts of stuff up there I reckon it would all be pretty stuffed now and half buried as the trees grow so quick up there the trash on the ground covers everything up pretty quick there is a 17a in the Heytesbury in the park at Simpson
http://www.gatewaybbs.com.au/Heytbury/Simpson.htm
It was still there last time I was there but who nos with all the do gooders around it has proberly been taken away as some kid might have fun climbing on it
The hardest thing trying to find anything in the Otways would be knowing were to look as all the old blokes from up there would be all gone now
