I wanted to confirm that all D7E models have this meter? I was not able to locate it on a 48A9*** serial machine.

Also, are these considered pretty reliable? They are geared to the crank, correct? So if they are a movin, generally, they are on target? I realize they don't really track "hours" as they log crankshaft revs essentially....

Hi,
the Service Meter has been supplied as standard on Cat equipment for a long time before your D7E.

It should be located on the lower side face of the Injection Pump Governor Housing, on the front right side of the engine down about level with the top of the chassis side rails from memory.

They are reasonably reliable as long as they stay water/dust tight.
Ideally they need periodic dismantling, cleaning and lubricating for reliability--rarely done in my experience as it is not in the Service Schedule.
They are often changed when a major engine rebuild is done or with some messing about the counters could be reset.

The SM is geared to read approx. 1 service hour when the engine operates for one hour at Full Load engine speed--RPM.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I just recently realized my D7 17A has the service meter, but without a glass window over it. It has a cover with screws. Opened it up and found 16,222. Wildly inaccurate by my estimation. 116,222 would better match the amount of wear it has. The only other one I've looked at was a D7 3T showing 20,666. This made me wonder if the meters have a tendency to croak with 3 matching numbers at the end for some reason? I know car odometers are most likely to break at XX999 due to the tiny amount of extra load from turning one more wheel. I guess I'll check mine again later and see if it's gone up.
