Can I remove only the motor from the starter assembly or must I remove the entire assembly to access the starter motor? I let the smoke out of the start switch yesterday and need to refill it.

thx,
jon

You don't need to remove the bolted on housing, just loosen the jam nut and back out the setbolt which retains the starter. It should slip out unless rusted in place. If only the switch failed you can remove it without loosening the starter.

I have a D2 pony started that was rusted into the retaining ring, so I heated the ring up with the mapp gas, let it cool with some Kroil, and then (gently) pushed it out with the press. Not sure if you have the press option for yours?
Cheers,
Neil

It slipped right out as soon as I loosened the set screw. Whew!

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
