Hello gentlemen! After copious amounts of time on here as well as youtube, I need some seasoned veterans opinions. Is this tank worth/capable of saving? The pic is of the worst side. But all sides have pin holes to some degree. Thanks to the help of this forum, I have rebuilt the pony carb. Then the magneto quit sparking, rebuilt it too. Now the gas tank........

I have a couple buddies that TIG weld. Wonder how much they would charge to just fab up a new tank?

You might find a better one for sale. What is your ser#?
But, it could be fixed. Some of the tank sealers will bridge small holes like that. First put some tape on the outside when you do it. The tank would need to be well cleaned and etched and that will open more holes I guess

If it is mostly sound but pitted, you can fix it quite easily with one of the tank relining compounds. If it is generally thin and there is rust flakes holding hands with paint between the pits you might need to find another candidate for restoration or perhaps braze some patches over the outside bridging the thin areas before relining it.

There are several compounds available but all must be applied to clean rust free metal to last. I have used Red Kote, there are also Kreme and I believe one called POR 15.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

In the picture above I had already put a couple small chain sections in there along with about 1/3 gallon of small gravel and shook the ever loving (explicative) out of it. A quart of acetone and a wire brush (and an hour of elbow grease) took the outside down to almost bare metal, except for the end of the tank in the picture. Imagine my surprise when I hosed out the inside of the tank and it lit up like a sprinkler! I poked and prodded it all over and it seems fairly solid even around the bigger holes. I have a perfect sized garbage can and 2 gallons of muriatic acid waiting for a chance to do their thing. Hard part is finding the tank liners around here without ordering them online. I'll stop by an auto body specialty supply shop on my way home from work tomorrow and see what they have. The local NAPA and several calls to other auto parts shops were fruitless on a Sunday.

I've repaired one that had lots of holes and it's help up so far. I documented that here;

I just had to build me a tank for my pony motor on my D7E It had the same thing except it had about 50 pin holes all in it and solid rust. I would suggest just fabing a new one.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
