My pony engine chuffs fume out the crank opening even after I cleaned the breather very good. What is the fix and how hard is it to do and find parts?

Sounds like blow-by around the piston rings. I have a pony on a D4 that'll shoot the dipstick out along with most of the oil if you run it with the filler cap on.

Best of luck,

That is correct but the blowby got better with a little use Also the breather was blocked originally due to lack of service. 30 minutes in the ultrasonic cleaner helped

Do you mean it's fuming from the hand crank right angle drive?

That's exactly what I mean.Seems like there should be seals to prevent that.

There is a seal in there, it's fairly easy to replace, it was still available through Cat when I replaced mine a few years ago.

Do I have to take the whole housing off the side of the engine or can it be replaced with the housing in place?

The housing needs to be removed from the engine. From memory, there's a plug in the bottom that you can take out to push the shaft out of the gear and the housing.

Would it be possible to use the self-tapping screw trick to get the seal out or is it too tight in there?

Yes, I suppose it makes sense. The seal would never pass over the two pins on the shaft in order to get it out the front.
