D7 cable dozer 17A3681 - can anybody tell me what year/make/model of this unit?

I got it from a friend, am an old part-time farmer, but admit I don't know my dozers....yet want to learn!

It's got a pony motor that I'm too old to crank (want to convert to electric start....but not sure if that means "electric start" the gasoline pony, or remove the pony and electric start the main Diesel engine).

It's also a cable blade, and I'm wanting to explore converting it to hydraulic.

I love this machine, and it is a "story" purchase in a good way....I'm just wanting to make it easier for an old guy to run.

My grandpa died before I was born....and yet I had always dreamed of fishing with him. This dozer will build the pond I will fish in for my 5 grandkids.....so any help you folks offer.... I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'm doing this on a U.S. teacher's salary, which isn't much... but I've never been afraid of a new challenge....so here I am!

That's a D7C, 1956 model. Good machine.
Starter is the easy part, just make sure it comes with RH helical drive (not the LH version). Bolts right up, replaces the pony motor.

To be clear.....I remove the entire pony motor? (You are my new hero by the way!)

Also....are there any "how to" videos? Because I'll have to get all the other components/parts like batteries, etc. so looking for that info too.

I thought I saw one on here last February, but can't find it anymore.

Also....I'm trying to become a member....but the "pay site" is not secure....so looking for another way.

THANK YOU!!!

Before you remove that starting engine you should know that the diesel engine will not start in temps below 60F without starting fluid or glow plugs installed. Electric start for the pony is simple; it should already be there, you might just need a battery.
If you keep the pony please do the research and learn the proper operating procedure. Starting engines are often destroyed by operator error, YouTube is full of operators abusing them.
You might try ebay for a Operation and Maintenance Instructions book for your 17A.
The important things: Change the starting engine oil often. Let the pony warm up thoroughly before engaging it with the diesel engine. Stop the pony by turning the fuel valve off not with the switch to prevent the oil being contaminated with gas.
Cable blades were used for years and just take a little getting used to.

i suggest. you tune up the pony. a well tuned pony is real easy to start and isn't terrible expensive to do. another suggestion try out the cable operated blade and adjust the cable control for smooth operating. i think you might just find that you have a perfectly good dozer that digs just as good and easy as if you spend a fortune on those mods. you can then spend the money you saved on "fishing poles"😛

D46U straight blade,D46U cat angle blade,allis chalmers AD4 grader and Khoering 404 dragline. D4C 40A,D4 2T and scraper.

Thank you so much sir, I just got my membership today! Sound advice....duly noted.... I've been reading BB for 2 days straight....and learned a ton....and the concensus is clearly with what you're saying...and that's what I'm gonna do (electric start the pony motor, I'm simply too old to crank it).

THANK YOU AGAIN !!! Gwh

I purchased my D717A #14888 about 23 years ago and it has been nothing but fun, some ups and downs, but fun. It had a bad pony motor and I replaced it with electric starter. I just hook up two 12 volt batteries and in warm weather I can get many days worth of starts from them before needing to recharge them. I have built pond, dug basement, built drive way, cleared brush, and crushed a lot of junk. My cable blade worked ok, then great when I replaced the cutting edges. I am digging in Iowa dirt, so easy digging. I consider myself to have some mechanical aptitude, so reading and thinking has gone a long way towards making repairs and maintenance into "fun" projects. I did put in glow plugs in first three cylinders, but not the 4th one because I did not want to disassemble a rusty turbocharger to swap out pre-combustion chambers. I rarely have had to start my machine in cooler weather (40s and 50s), but it always did with batteries charged up. I have finished most of my projects and my machine is quite tired, it and I were cast forth in the same year. It leaks more fluids than me, but not worth it to repair the machine, debatable for me. If you have time and a little bit of money, should have a good time. Not sure how many hours I have put on my machine, but the tracks were worn out when I got it, but they still can push some dirt, I just don't make any sharp turns. In last 4 years it has developed some type of leak of compression gasses into coolant, so I do not crank the radiator cap down tight, and do not work it in hot weather, and I get by with a little bit of bubbling over every now and then. I could go on, but if the price is right, you will have a good time, especially when everyone thinks you are crazy for getting it.
