Can't get these screens out of my 17A air cleaner for cleaning. Are they removable?

I would have said, "Yes" until I saw the two black dots which appear to be spot welds on that ring. Probably to hold them in?

Should be removable screens in the tray assembly. Your picture is looking into the filter body and that's as far as you can go.

Hi Team,
the scans below may help with cleaning these beasts. They are from a Cat publication. We had one at The Dealers--yes, it was the Apprentices job to clean them when we were doing our time in the Engine Shop.
A big problem with pressure washing or steam cleaning the upper section is to get the moisture out and dried as well as the dirt therein not being completely removed before refitting and then being drawn thru into the engine.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

pulled mine apart yesterday and the filter is disposable. It sits up top in the canister and is held in by a lower screen and three thumb screws.

Your''s looks different. Is your's an oil bath type?

I though all 17A's used a disposable filter element with no oil bath?

G'day All. I think they changed from oil bath to paper element when they turbocharged the engine at 17a 11879. My D7D parts book only shows later type.

Add this instruction to the mix.
The D7D used oil bath to 17A11432 then had an optional field installation (vertical) dry type which became standard at 17A11879-up.

D7E used oil bath air cleaners to 47A11431. At 47A11432-up there was a field option change over to dry.
At 47A3396 to 3677 the air cleaner was vertical dry then changed to horizontal dry at 47A3678-up.

Hi OM,
thanks for adding the scan about NOT Steam Cleaning oil bath air cleaners. I knew there was some reason not to but had not found that article as yet.

Hi, OM.
Thank you for posting that information, and for all the other information so freely given. How-wevver, would you please check the last ser, # that you gave for the 17A machines. "17A11A1189" somehow doesn't seem quite right.

Thanks again.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
