My 49 3T has developed a prob. When pushing hard it wants to start driving left on its own and if i really lay into it it makes a slipping noise. Question is is it the left side steering clutch slipping causing it to ease left? I think it shouldnt make a difference but the left track is adjusted about 1-2 inches out more than right sode

Hey 49D73T,

Here is what I experienced many, many years ago when I was young (under 21 - I'm 74 now) and still working on my family ranch. At the time I was assigned the task to doze down a large area of trees, mostly mesquite, and other bushes and trees to prepare the land for irrigation. At one point the left track (steering clutch) began slipping. I was not even able to push over a 6" diameter mesquite tree because the left track would NOT push. I finally found I could line up a tree with the right track and get the task done.

I even opened the inspection area where the steering clutch (left side) inspection plate was and found a whole bunch of oil sludge deep down in there. My father would NOT stop and fix it becasue we HAD to GET the JOB done. I finally quit working at the ranch and went and got some other job.

I have later, years later, figuered out that probably the transmission seal had "given up" and some of the oil got into the steering clutch compartment and thus the steering clutch would slip. I will never know for sure but it made me so angry that my father would NOT take care of the D7, that I quit.

So, maybe you are experiencing the same problem - OR the steering clutch on that side needs adjustment.:clap2:

If you have an oil leak as described the brake on that side usually will not wok properly . IE; Pedal at correct height but needs huge pressure on pedal to make it work.
Remove the plugs in the bottom of the steering clutch housing to drain any oil.
Steering clutches are a bit protected inside where they are and takes a big leak to get oil in there.
Have you got any free play on the lever???
Or steering clutch could be simply worn out.
A.K.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
