Was wondering if anyone would like to voice an opinion on transplanting a turbo D339 out of a D7 17A into a 47' D7 3T5856? From what I can see the engine mounting holes are identical and I would just reuse the 3T flywheel since the tractor uses a dry clutch and they both attach with 6 bolts to the crank flange. The 17A I have is too good and is still used a good bit to be considered as a parts donor and the 3T I recently acquired is straight as a pin and has better than 90% on the entire undercarriage. Sadly the ole D8800 exhaust was left open for many years and upon teardown and a trip to the machine shop it was revealed that numerous hairline cracks are present at the top of the block from freezing action on top of the pistons. However the machine shop said the block could be fixed. The price they quoted was scary! But the crank had been turned once to .025 and the rod journals were now worn well beyond .050 so its no good. Mainly curious if anyone thinks the later engine will be too stressful on the gear train of the 3T or if the dry clutch would be able to handle it.

Where are you located? 3T'S are everywhere. Agood running engine should be reasonable.

A collector here in the UK has fitted (in different tractors) both 6 cylinder 5 3/4 bore and V8 5 3/4 bore engines into D7 tractors. Neither has had transmission of final drive problems to the best of my knowledge. I think you would be pretty safe with the turbo 47A engine in the 3T chassis. I don't know about the practicalities of it though.
Interestingly, I visited another UK collector on Saturday who had a brand new Russian "D7" engine sitting in a frame. It looked pretty much the same as a D7 engine, but I doubt the quality would be anywhere near as good as the real Cat engine.

Yes, 3T engines are still around, but heads, or any engine with good heads--those are hard to find. metal fatigue, I guess. Too many times hot and cold.
