Went to look at a D7 today. Turns out it was a D7 serial # 3t19792 took some pictures and measured the tracks left side average is 8.21" and 4 1/16" and right is 8.18" and 4 3/16" but not sure what make the chains are tho. Hyster D7D winch on the back, pup start and pads have 4" welded onto each side ( was told it almost walks on water) and hydraulic track tensioners ( are these added after? or original)

When I talked to the owner on the phone he said he doesn't know anything about caterpillars and he bought this a few years ago when he was a tractor short. He was pulling diamond drills around swamps. So he bought the tractor and pulled the blade then went pulling machinery around. Told me they don't try to move fast so he never looked into the wired in first gear shift and left it at that. Then said that it has a dry clutch whatever that means. What would you offer? That was the most of the conversation.

Internet searches bring up that its an ok tractor. Year would be around 50-51. What would you offer? Scrap value due to the questionable tranny? Rollers and sprockets are worn and it looks like 14693 hours if that seems right. Seals are all wet but still holding oil from sitting a year or so. He might hang up on me if I offer 2k 😊

would you touch it? I havnt heard it run, he said it would start right up

I like what I see. $4,000 if it fires right up, maybe more if I could actually see and hear it but then I'm biased as to 3Ts. Transmission probably an easy fix, broken detent plunger(gear lock).

I reckon if you could get it for 4000 grand it would be really good buying

The sprockets don't look bad, but looks like the rollers have been hitting the pin bosses. At $4000 it looks like a good buy.

The pins and bushes are definitely worn out, plus the links and maybe the rollers as well, the chains will need changing before they knock the sprockets right out and cut the pads back down to normal unless you are working it in a swamp, they cause a lot of side stress and extra wear on the chains.

The transmission lock may be just out of adjustment too. Bottom rollers may be worn way down and a rebuild would get them off the pin bosses. catskinner

Hi triple D My rule of thumb on this kind of stuff is figure scape price 200 /ton. If she weighs 15 ton = 3000 cash If you look at scrap prices in California lately I'm not that far off. 200 is a good number until you find a30 or something like with That rare part you need on it and it cost you 1000 .00 - cat 30. 9500 lbs times 200 ton

A wired gear shift lever in first gear may indicate transmission is about to shell. My newly purchased used 3t D7 worked fine in every gear but first, which kept jumping out of gear. Upon looking at shift locking device on side of transmission, I found it was disconnected. I hooked it up and went back to pulling my Letounreau LS scraper in first gear to load. I then saw transmission oil on the ground. The side of my transmission had broken out from the pressure of worn out bearings. One thousand dollars took care of the problem in 1959.

Thanks to the guys who expressed sorrow for my deceased wife Pauline. One of the worst things ever to happen to me.

I have a D8H 36A series in the country with swinging drawbar, cab and hydraulic driven water cooler and 3 valve hydraulic control system which I used to use pulling farm implements. Don't use anymore due to running Challenger MT765 rubber tracks.

Yours Darrol D8H
