my 17a has worn out track. a neighbor has a junker d7 3t with much better track which i removed to put on my machine. i planned to add a link to each side since the 17a is one link longer. after removal, i have come to find out it is sealed track that is supposed to be for a d6c cat. would i be better off not to use this track. the dozer is used in rocky, steep terrain, a few days/year. advice would be appreciated.

It would be helpful to know the actual link numbers but in general they are the same 8.00 in. pitch but the new link height is 4.78 in for the D6C and 4.68 in for the D7.....allowing for some wear it would seem the D6C rails would work fine.

Saw your post on YTD with the added bit of info that the chain width is narrower on the D6C. To me that makes it a no go.

Guess I should ask how much narrower. May be ok if it is within acceptable wear range.

old magnet, the d6 track link numbers are 3p1112 and 3p1113. The track pitch of the d6 is 8 inches, the d7 is worn 8 1/4 inch. d6 link height is 4 1/4, d7 is 4 3/8. d6 measurement across outside of links is 7 3/4 inches, the d7 is 8 inches. d6 inside measurement between links is 4 inches, the d7 is 4 1/4. I realize the d6 links are worn, the bushings have been turned, pads very good. d7 pads poor, bushings worn, unturned.

First thing that jumps out is the D6 link height wear.
The SP1112-13 links were originally 4.78 in. height and are considered 100% worn (through the hardened surface) at 4.34 in.

The D6 front idler raised hub is 3.75 in wide new.
The D7 is 4.0 in. wide new.

If you do the 4-link stretched chain pin and bushing wear measurement (five pins) 100% worn is 32.46 in. for the D6

The info I have does not give the overall width or inside width of the rails but you can see they are pretty well worn.

Afraid there is not a lot of incentive to go through the hassle of mounting or using either of these tracks. Also to be considered is the condition of the rollers and sprockets.

Here are the dimensions from a 1986 undercarriage book. "NC" refers to "Non-Current" undercarriage. The P/No's refer to "link assemblies" - i.e. track chains - not individual link P/No's.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
