I had posted on here a while back about the old girl having a miss at start up. I also mentioned she evened out when warmed up, and didn't seem to suffer from a lack of power, so I haven't worried much about it.

Going over it this winter, I thought I might have had an exhaust leak at the rear of the engine. I pulled back the manifold to make sure the gasket was still there and in good shape when I discovered that it is slobbering at the exhaust outlet, on the 2nd cylinder from the rear. The other 3 looked fine.

Can I conclude the miss then is on this cylinder, and that I need to pull and replace the injector or is something else amiss? Thanks, Dan

It most likely is Dan but if you can still run it, crack the fuel lines one at a time to make sure. Could be ring problems giving low compression nd missfire when cold aswell as oil consumption.

Bob, thanks for the response. It uses about 1/2 to 1 gallon a day when working hard. We had the same consumption on our old 9U that we used to have.

Dan, I have a D7-17A that had a similar problem. For several years it would miss when started and then would smooth out after a few minutes. Never thought anything about it until last year when the engine started to knock. I thought it was a rod coming loose and looked at many things but could not find the problem until Old Magnet suggested that I try getting a new injector pump and try it on each cylinder until the knock went away. Well guess what it stopped the knock when I put the new injection pump on the cylinder that was causing the knocking sound. After that the engine does not miss when it is first started up. This may or maynot be your problem but an injection pump for each cylinder is not very expensive, less than $150.

Dick, thanks also for the response. I thought of that too. But, would I have the slobber issue on the cylinder if that was the case? The slobber is what made me think it might be a poor spray pattern or dribble or something.

You may have some broken rings on that cylinder causing the oil consumption.

Best way to check would be to move the injector, then the individual pump to another cylinder and see if the problem follows. Not very often the pumps are the problem but does happen, check valves can go bad and even had one where the rack quadrant setscrew got loose and the pumps timing was lost.

Dan, my 17A had the same signs of slobbering at the exhaust port on the cylinder that had the bad injection pump. The oil consumption that you are experiencing is not that much. Mine uses about the same amount of oil per day as yours when I work it hard. I doubt that you have any piston ring problems. I would look at the injection pump as I recommended earlier. It is much easier to trouble shoot the problem you are having by buying a new injection pump and trying it on the cylinder that is miss firing rather than move the existing injection pumps around.
