Basic starter needs are a Delco Remy model 40MT, 42MT or the larger 50MT 24v clockwise rotation starter with the RH helix drive gear (not LH) and the adaptor housing. The adapter housing and drive is available at
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Triodiode-DC-Electric-And-Tractor__W0QQ_armrsZ1 or from other sources.
That's just the beginning....add switches, wiring, batteries, battery box, block off plates for the old pony, etc
Then there is the generator/alternator matching and glow plug chambers and glow plugs from the later 17a models.

Here are a couple of pictures of the 17a setup.

Check the transmission interlock, linkage, etc.
Not to uncommon for these to get out of adjustment or stuck.

I'm not that familiar with that particular alternator mount but I suspect there would be a machined flat surface where a circle of fasteners could be attached, much like you see for the mounting flange. It's a little more common to use an adaptor that mounts up to a Motorolla flange using the Motorolla to Delco alternator front housing. Inside the adaptor will be a flex coupling, usually Lovjoy type. Also should have a cooling fan.

Yes, that is the location. Detent plungers need to be in right position or you can't shift any gears. You can try disconnecting the linkage and moving lever by hand before "going in".

Mounting an alternator to a converted generator/pulley is a pretty common approach and works fine. Not as clean as a direct mount but every bit as functional.
