Plenty of power at the batteries and at the starter big wire. fresh new batteries I must have either a bad starter switch or wired wrong๐Ÿ˜
So will try again after I think and diagnose it bertter

Is this a new conversion?...was it working before?
If it's an old installation check start switch and solenoid and grounding.
If it is new I can post a wiring diagram.

This an old conversion , it was working when I got it , sorry to say it has been setting for a couple of years.

I checked the start switch conectionI cant get any fire. This switch it is mounted on top of the gauge console. it is like the old dim light at the foot, it has 2 bolts with on Positive wire going to it from the solinoid. I cleaned all this wires. Next I will try to find another switch
The starter big wire has plenty of power so my thought itis the switch.

Please post wiring diagram someone did a real job here

Here is a wiring diagram and you can get the correct start/glow plug switch here. http://cgi.ebay.com/Caterpillar-Equipment-Glow-Plug-Heat-Switch-7N4160_W0QQitemZ160369377841QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Heavy_Equipment_Parts?hash=item2556c28231

Mash starter button and then take a BIG hammer.......LOL

That's the old tool of last resort.

Have you tried shorting the wires at the solenoid? How about across the post on the end of the starter to see if the starter will at least spin?

OM ,

Just ordered the switch๐Ÿ˜Š , I have bought from the same source before good prices , Thank you for remind me. did you get my e mail

3T , I have tried to short the wire across the Solinoid ( they are not a live As far the big starter , that is 24 Volts , I dont like buring or crushing thing )
Even though I just made 12 lbs hammer with 1 in diam solid steel handle๐Ÿ˜„ . it will be used to drive in or out big bushing .

I think it is the switch and few wire connection that will need to be cleaned . Now that I ahve a nice diagram we should be to make it work

Thank you
Ali

to diagnose the solenoid on top of the starter, jump from the small terminal that has the switch wire on it up to the big battery cable connection on the end of the solenoid.

should spark a bit and click in loudly.

If it does and the starter doesn't turn, you could have a stuck brush in starter or other problem. Sometimes tapping on brush end of starter with small-ish hammer will get them unstuck. Starter could already be stuck engaged in flywheel๐Ÿ˜ฎ be prepared to remove cables or open disconnect to keep from killing batteries and burning up starter if solenoid doesn't release when you quit shorting it.

no spark, no click......
1 no ground, check ground attached to other small terminal on solenoid.
2 bad solenoid coil, replace solenoid

spark and no click...........
1 bad solenoid-replace
2 low voltage-correct by charging batteries, cleaning connections etc.
3 dirty ground from the opposite small terminal to the frame (maybe internal through the starter brushes if there's only one small terminal on the solenoid),
4 Plunger in solenoid or drive on starter stuck, remove starter, disassemble as necessary and free this up.......Bench test with a good heavy pair of jumper cables.

diagnose starter motor itself (no solenoid) by shorting across the two large terminals on the solenoid with a heavy wrench. This will get HOT quickly, don't burn yourself on that end of it.

If motor doesn't spin up or you don't get a spark when you short it......
check ground terminal on end of starter, check other end of ground cable connection to engine block and frame etc.
Tap with hammer etc.
Remove and repair starter motor.

Does your conversion starter go in the gasoline starting motor hole with an adapter of some kind or is it with a standard 3 bolt flange mount elsewhere on the clutch housing?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

CC Thank you for the post it will be uswefull to diagnose

I think I need to put a ground cable to the block ๐Ÿ˜ฎ . This machine came with out kill switch and ground cable . The only ground is the back of the starter
once my switch gets here I will rewire it๐Ÿ˜‰

I have not ha time topost , been busy on city job line boring heavytrucks ๐Ÿ˜Š
Today went out and tested the switch by cross the swtch wire from th Solinoid to the starter red big wire. As I expected the Solinoid kicked in and the starter turned the engine real nice ๐Ÿ˜Š I could have kick in the compression lever and te machine woud have started fine.๐Ÿ˜Ž That tell me as OM diagnosed it ,The switch is bad. I have orderd one it not show up yet. But plan rewire the machine as you have posted in the diagram. with a kill switch ( which I have several) and new glow Starter switch, and put a good ground wire .

OM , CC,
Nothing to report on the electrical yet . I did received my switch today , look like I will be wiring this week end . It is suppose to be in the high 60's here in alabama and it is dry for change.๐Ÿ˜‰
We should be able to fire up that D 7 17A without any issues.

I do have to tell that when diging around the starter I found that is is mounted only with 2 bolts. There is on bolt hole that have not been drilled from when they installed the starter. Should I dril it and tap or just leave alone?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
