This weekend while we were working on other issues with our D6D, we took a look at the alternator. As it quit charging a couple months ago.

The alternator set up confused me. Is this a one wire alternator? It has three wires all hooked up to one terminal. I've attached a picture of the alternator.

That appears to be some variety of Delco. Looks to be similar to one used on an 80's model 4900 international truck. Many Delco alternators are available as a "1 wire" configuration. I am not familiar enough with the D6d wiring to say whether hooking all 3 wires to the output stud would be correct, but if it used to work.............

Most of the smaller Delco alternators of the 70's and 80's use the same regulator and brush rig etc which are available from aftermarket/autoparts suppliers. Those are usually the only parts required to return one to normal operation. They are easily disassembled and most anyone willing to tackle one can successfully reassemble a good unit. Certainly any automotive electrical shop can handle overhauling one.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

There are several options for alternators on the D6D.
Appears you have the Delco 19 amp version.
Yes, all three wires go to one stud.
1-wire goes to the oil pressure switch then back to the regulator mounted on the alternator.
1-wire goes to the ammeter
1-wire goes to the light switch.

Thanks! Now that I know it’s hooked up correctly, I’ll take it off and get it rebuilt. Thanks for your help.
