My D6D 4X has a steering problem. When it is cold everything is great. When it gets hot the left side clutch will not re-engage when you release the lever. It does not do it every time but it is enough that it definitely needs to be addressed. I use JD 303 in the trans. I read on a thread where Sid described something very similar and he said that the orings on the clutch control piston were rock hard and he replaced them, problem solved. Anyone have any ideas?

Bad seals on the clutch piston wouldn't keep the clutch from engaging....exactly the opposite. The clutch is engaged by spring pressure and only releases when the piston compresses the springs.

Could be the clutch release valve or linkage isn't working properly and sometimes sticks open so it's constantly putting pressure to the release piston. The only other thing I can think of is if the discs have worn grooves in the clutch housing and sometimes hang up holding the clutch open.

I'd put a gauge on the port after the clutch valve and when the clutch won't engage, take a look and see what the pressure is reading....should be zero with the clutch engaged so if it's showing pressure you've got a valve problem.

I think you should check the release pressures down at the elbows going into the case. I have a feeling the release pressure might be staying there and not dropping off. If you find that, check your linkages are not hanging up. If linkages are okay the valve spool may be sticking inside. The spools are forced to the clutch release position by the levers and returned to the engaged position by the springs. Any debris can jam them up.

Do you guys have any photos or manual pages that show the spool valve location and breakdown?

When my Dad operates the dozer it never has this problem but he really takes it easy and only runs it half throttle. The usual operator is the one who has the problem. He runs it 3/4 to full throttle. He is also 6' 2" and weighs 320lb and is a lot more heavy handed with the steering levers.

The steering clutch valves are under the seat...lift if up and you'll see the linkage from the steering levers. There is also a steering clutch check valve that's next clutch valve. (at least on a 6c) Not sure if it could cause your problem.

The scans below are from a D6c so they'll be a little different but will give you an idea of how it operates. The D6D has power brakes connected to the steering clutch that the D6c doesn't have. I't possible that it could be a linkage adjustment problem....the scan shows how to adjust it but again that will be somewhat different on your "D".

I really need to find a service manual for my D6D. Any idea where I could find one and how much it should cost?

You could try Cat legendary literature from your Cat dealer.
