Got a question here for old magnet; catsilver, or anyone else with access to cats tibs [technical information bullitens] or other confidential files.
In the mid 80s a group of 31X D6Ds from japan were incorrectly line bored in the deadshaft area; and many had to be repaired under warranty. Have heard this story from several different sources; but have never been able to track down any information about it. Dispite the fact i even worked for the dealer here in the early 80s. GGH. Was unable to get any information from any of my ex bosses. So just curious if anyone else can shed any light on this question ?
Was rumoured to be around the 3000 serial numbers ?
Any help appreciated; cheers Merv

Sorry, don't have any info on that one. Seems like the kind of stuff that Oz Dozer might have collected if you can make contact with him.
Sure would make a bulge in the rug.....

Hi Mervyn

I note that you have a "CAT" D6D - 31X tractor, These tractors were as you say built in Japan, they were in production from 1977 thru until 1996, with a total of 4,867 tractors built. I hope that this piece of useless info is of interest to you, I wonder how many came to our shores ? ?.

Hi Alan
Hope your keeping well. No such thing thing as useless information, just some is better than others !
Last records i had was granny gough bought 63 31x series down here, plus 3 4x from the us and a handfull of other gear drive and lgp models. Plus a few other people bought some in themselves.
Both mine were private imports, still 31x models but not the export spec that we usually got; just minor differences like gaurding and the deluxe seats.
If you run into Owen Neal could you ask him about this question, he is one person who might know.
He should remember me, he was my boss in auckland in the 1980s, heard he later went back to chch.
Only really want to know if mine 31x3620 was one of them but hopefully it was a year later. Other one is a 78 model. Am up for a final rebearing job this winter, just gotta physc myself up to getting my spanners out :behindsofa:
Cheers mate merv

Sorry, I never heard of this problem and the dealers keep TIB info fairly secure.

Thanks for that catsilver.
Had heard this story 15 years ago and couln,t find any info then. Was told if "yours was one of them it would have failed by now !"
Last year was talking to another mechanic/leading hand who had emigrated here from the UK and had worked for levertons ? and he knew about this problem, but didn,t know the s/ns.
Although i would have thought no 31xs would have made it to the UK. You guys had your own 20x models.
A few of them made it downunder too. Ex british army ones with twin tilt angle blades and boughton hyd winchs.
Alot of Terex TS8s came here too from the same army, but there another story 😞
Cheers Merv

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
