So I am in the process of buying a D6C, 10k serial with 3303 and power shift. I was about to go pick her up but decided to have a heavy equipment guy go take a look at her. He says the undercarriage is decent but says the recoil spring is broke (see the pic with spray paint). Can anyone lend their expertise and tell me whether that looks to be the case (broken). I was also told a new spring would be well over $1,000 bucks and that a used spring was $600 bucks. I have no experience with this machine and was just looking for any advice/thoughts/tips, etc. I appreciate the help.

Does look like the spring is broken there where the coil is collapsed.
Check ebay for aftermarket springs, I see them advertised frequently. I haven't checked that close but seems they were under $300.

Check your part number for the s/n tractor you have.
This could be the right one.

I recently purchased aftermarket springs, off ebay, for my 955H. They were $165 each. Plus shipping.

I had a broken spring on my 941b--it was broke in two places but i got 20 years out of it before it really let go---it all depends how carefull you are running the machine and not slamming the idler into objects.
and yes i got an after market spring on ebay for about $150--got the new bolt too.

I bought a recoil spring for my 74 A D-6 on Ebay For around $ 350 and freight .The other cost factor is that after you take a torch ,and cut it up ,break the track ,and get it out .The new spring has to be pressed to a demmension Cat dealers shop rate is $100 an hour .last estimate I got was it was going to take 2 hours shop time to press it ,plus your going to need a new center bolt and retaining nut I think that was $50 or $75 aftermarket So your going to have $7 to 800 dollars in it plus your labor in and out

Add to that would be a good time to reseal the hydraulic track adjuster while your in there.

Sprockets look good but the track adjuster is well out and the bushes look to be hitting the sprocket tips in reverse, I reckon the pins and bushes must be just about worn out, its worth checking further, the spring can be removed and refitted without splitting the track but put the gas axe through the old spring before touching anything else.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
