Has anyone on the board removed the transmission form a d6c 10k. Is there anything I need to watch for. Example when I remove a part on outside pieces fall to the bottom on the inside? Mine broke the pinion shaft housing. Also does anyone have parts?

Here's the page detailing removal....several steps are listed before pulling trans. Never done it but I read that some guys like to drop them out the bottom instead.

I have removed the transmission from a D6C 10K and several D6D 4X tractors. The easiest method by far is to place the tractor up on a pair of railroad ties, drop the belly pan, lower the transmission onto a sheet of tin or sheet metal and then drag the transmission from under the tractor. Reverse the procedure to install. All you need is a small chain hoist and a come-a-long. Many of the transmission parts are the same for the 10K and the 4X or 20X D6D tractors. These powershift transmissions are very easy to work on; I would strongly recommend that you have a Caterpillar Service Manual to go by.
Good Luck, 👍

Helped a guy replace pinion shaft bearings. Then took trans apart to clean and make sure any pieces didn't get in. As my friend says: It's just nuts and bolts. Just make sure to keep track of location and position of pieces as you remove and replace.

Don't have any problems with my trans/torque converter but the local shop I use was trying to get me to pull them for inspection & bearing replacement since I don't know how many hours are on them. Bearings & seals are inexpensive, but if things fly apart it can get pretty pricey. He says he could do one over a weekend, but he's done it for many years.

I'd probably have to go out the bottom since my brush guard is welded on...not that a gas axe couldn't take it off.

Are the pinion bearings a common failure?

Not too common, Bevel gear shaft bearings fail more often, check yours.

I'm assuming you've got a powershift trans so that's what I scanned

Here's pretty much the rest of the pages from my manual. There may be some pages from another manual on inspection of components. I'll look at those tomorrow evening.

Here are a few more pages showing removal of relief valve, scavenge pump, etc. plus a page for inspection of clutch packs in the trans.
