Looking at a D6B 44A SN 9587, Engine SN 9537 It runs great, the undercarriage: grousers 20%, chain 90% (Cat Sealed), sprockets 40%.

I am curious what it would take to update to sectional sprockets.

I plan to use it for ripping orchards with 2 shanks approx 24" deep. The draw for me to the D6B is that the height is lower than the C series making it ideal for orchard use.

I think I know what Old Magnet is going to say (LOL!) from reading other threads but I appreciate any input!

Does it have 6.91" pitch tracks now? If so all you need is the segment ring adapter and segments. If you need to update to 6.91" pitch rails, segmented sprocket adapter ring and segments plus new grousers the cost will be more than a 44A is worth.

The sprockets can be renewed by cutting off the old ring and welding on new ones. If the tracks are already updated, instead of welding on a sprocket ring, the ring to carry the segments can be welded on.

The other way to change the sprockets is to have them pulled and the new ones of either type pressed back on. Usually this is reserved for when there are final drive oil seal leaks on the inside of the sprockets unless you can get it done cheaper than the welding. Leaks at the outside of the sprockets can be repaired without pulling them, but who knows how long before the inner seals may start to leak, so it may be best to bite the bullet and have them pulled if you have leaks.

Final drive bearings needing tightened can also cause leaks at the sprockets.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

6.75" pitch uses link #'s 2S5959 &60 (sealed)
6.91" pitch uses link #'s 3P7153 &54 (sealed)
Mixing the two leads to rapid wear.
You should also check the 5-pin stretched chain length.

Old Magnet,
By the way I grew up in Watsonville. With the following pics what is you opinion of the undercarriage on this Cat. I do now know (thanks for the Part #'s) the tracks are the 6.75" links.

It's worn but still has ample life left. Need actual measurements to tell how much. Rollers don't appear to be hitting the pin bosses and front idler is well back. 5-pin stretched chain check is what tells the pin and bushing story.

Assuming everything works as it should I'd say something in the $3.5 -$4.5K range. Depends on how bad you need it. My recommendation would be to use the money to get in to something with the D333c or 3306 engine.
