Electric starter for pony engine spins over but does not engage. Trying to remove starter so that it may be repaired. There are essentially 3 pieces. Starting with the electric motor, it seems to be slipped into a housing for the gears. The 3rd component is the belt connecting the gear housing to the pony motor.
Am unable to remove the electric motor nor the gear housing.

Please advise.

Thank you,

Don

there is a large bolt with a jam not that threads through the housing that the starter slides into. the bolt and nut are 15/16 wrench. this bolt is what holds the starter into its housing.

That and a bunch of rust!

Got to get the gear/belt housing tapped/ pried off it. You spraying with loose juice?
Heat is your friend here. Keep it spread out and heat the whole circumference of the mount the starter is stuck in and tap back on starter .........It will come out.

Second cc's advice. I put cold packs on the motor and heated the entire periphery of the bracket and gently tapped here and there. Once it moved a fraction, the rest was easy. It just has to move a little, and then you can magnify that movement without going to town on it. Once out and cleaned up with sandpaper, apply copper antiseize

I have one starter that likes to hang up. Probably a combination of things because the more often it's used the less trouble it gives. When you get it off put anti seize and or grease on the shaft the bendix gear runs on. Make sure the bearing on the belt pulley is good. I replaced one and it was a very common bearing.
