you pull it back towards seat to go forward and you push it forward toward the engine to go reverse. Netural is in the middle.
I like to keep it in toward the seat (F) when the tractor is idling. This keeps the lower shaft turning for lubrication of the bearings.
I believe the operators manual says it does not matter if forward or reverse, but do not leave it in neutral as Fordhook stated. But it seems more out of your way in the forward position.

Ray54 is correct on what the operators manual says. Either way but needs to be in one or the other at extended idling for lubrication.
Either way ? Yes , for lubrication of the upper shafts . BUT : long time ago in the army with 3T d7's (the same kind of transmission) they taught us to put it in forward when the machine was parked with the back to something and to put in backward if there was something in front of the machine . So , nobody will be surprised when someone will put it in some gear and move to the side where it should not move . And since I always handle this way . Safety first .
