I recently got tired of a persistent oil leak on my left final drive outside bellows seal. I tore it down and found the outer bearing looked good, after pulling the bearing cage as sembley, I found three pits in the bearing cup, but the bearing looked good. Also the bellows seal looked good. After removing the large sealing washer, I found that it had never been turned, but there was no gasket between the washer and sprocket. My sprocket is tight on the splines, and I do not want to Remove it. I replaced the bearing cup and bearing and put new gasket between washer and sprocket, also put in new outer bellows seal. After reassembly, no leak at all on outer bellows. Maybe after three days, 2 drips on inner bellows. I would like to hear input on what I did and why a previous mechanic would have left out the gasket between washer and sprocket. Makes me think there is no inner gasket between sprocket and washer, but the inside leak is very small. The outside leak was bad. All opinions appreciated. Will try to post pic of outer bearing cup.
Sounds like you did good! I would not have pulled the sprocket either! These old machines could tell some stories if they could talk.
