I keep using the same bands just rivet the new lining on.i use a hand grinder to carefully remove rivet heads and punch out.
I have a friend that claims to have changed them with fuel tank in place. I always remove tank and clean all the dirt out on top of case.
I had access to a old time brake rivet machine, that had foot pedal and mechanical leverage but no more. It was broke in the Dec 2003 earthquake. So it has been a while since I have done one. But from discussions here McMaster-Carr has rivet punches, and give it a lick or 2 with a hammer.
I know others that send bands to clutch and brake repair shops.
It could be entertaining to watch one of the young white coat guys Cat could send out today😉 as long as the bill was not mine to pay. Or you may luck out and get a guy that has done a 1000 and uses the braille method and no extra rusted parts and it's done in a few hours.
The other unknown, if the brakes have been bad is there wear into the drum. If you get into that you need to be prepare for the "can of worms" as another recent thread about a 17a D7 repair. One of the examples of old Ben Franklin's "a stitch in time saves time" and money. I will assume at this stage of the D6's life it is a low hours per year machine, so I would live with grooves from rivets dragging on drum. But I have seen drums that look like someone ran sand paper for linings.
Steve Fonseca in Princeton, CA should have the brake bands with new lining available. He might even have time to do the swap for you. Most of the local CAT dealers go to him for those parts I am told. Less expensive than going to dealer.
Can you provide me with telephone number or URL for Fonseca?
