Hi Guys

I have a D68U with a winch that has been giving me all sorts of trouble over the past few years so have decided to convert to hydraulic system. Am considering installing one large Ram in the centre to replace the cable on the pully. Is this OK or should I be looking to install 2 Rams? Very grateful for your feedback.

Regards

Single cylinder blade has been applied to some Cat models but never seemed to be all that popular. Can result in significant stress on the push arms and blade frame.

Not an Expert ,So stand to be corrected . If you plan to mount the ram where the pulley blocks are now , remember it is only designed to have pressure put on it lifting the blade.Putting a ram there you will be able to push the blade down, and i would think put strain on the nose cone that it was not designed to have . You would want to look at a nose cone designed from Hydraulics to see where they mount and where the extra strength has been put into it .Current nose cone won't be designed to mount the hydraulic pump etc

Hello , you will not be the first one who converted into hydraulics . This Italian contractor converted his D9 of the first series into hydraulics . The first D9D was only available with cable control .
Make sure that the ram may not be exposed to lateral forces .
Good luck , johan7

Hi there

Thanks for the response. Grateful if you could expand on what is involved in "a hyd front end" .
Cheers

other things to be considered are if you only have one ram the pump needs to be only half the size as only half the amount of oil has to be shifted
It is pretty hard to find off the shelf hydraulic pumps of enough capacity to pump the oil requirements needed for these conversions to work to the correct specs so the less oil needed the easier to find a pump and spool valves ect

They do work ok with only one ram in the center some other brand blades were made new like that and worked fine I have been told there is less stress with only one ram than two I have never been able to see how that is so but doesnt mean its not right

Hi, MOC.
Welkum too ther 4um.

Yes, it is possible to do what you are considering but there are some things to consider as others have mentioned. The cable hardnoses were only designed to take weight pulling down on them Adding upward force to the mix, especially in the centre as would be the case with one ram, would be something outside the design parameters of said hardnose. Further, that centre section would be the weakest point of the whole hardnose when it comes to upward force exerted on it. This is not to say that it can't be done but I do think that some consideration needs to be given to beefing up the top of the hardnose to enable it to better withstand any upward loadings on it - 'cos there WILL be upward loadings once you have downpressure capability.

One ram in the centre would be getting asked to do the same work that twin rams on either side would be doing so would likely need to be somewhat stronger, which may equate to a bigger bore, or it may mean a higher pressure system. I suggest doing some homework - and asking questions here 'cos there is a LOTTTT of wisdom and experience to be had here just for the asking.

Would it be a rude question to ask what sort of problems you have been having with your current cable control? Again, a LOTTT of experience and knowledge to be had here just for the asking.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I would consider buying a complete hardnose off of a junked out 9U and installing it on your tractor. We did that with my 3T D-7 and made a good dozer into a great one.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

If you plumbed a single acting ram, why would that be more load on the front end than the cable setup. Also I don't think the ram size would be out of proportion because the load on the ram would be almost inline with the blade travel. (Or is there more download on the blade than I realize)

Sounds right to me anyhow.

Hi all,

Thanks for the welcome and also many thanks to all who have responded to my question. I was referred to the site by a friend who spoke highly of the level of knowledge and willingness to provide assistance by the members of ACMOC and already I can see why he said this to me. Very much appreciated guys.

I bought the D68U a few years ago and had trouble with the cable winch from the start. Appears that someone along the line had made some alterations and repairs which resulted in the winch being unstable and tightening of its own accord. The winch cover has a Steelweld brand on it however the winch is a CAT winch. The Steelweld cover does not fit snugly. I have taken the winch off again and the plates are damaged a lot again. So hence my decision to change to hydraulics.

Have taken all comments into place and am now thinking of either putting two Rams on or strengthening the nose should I go for the single Ram option.

Not sure if I can locate an old D9 to swap noses? If I could are they the same size?

Also my friend here locally is suggesting I convert to electric start and do away with the pony engine. Do you think this is a good move? Whilst the pony engine is one more step in the starting procedure I think it may be a good one to go for on cold starts?

Thanks again.

Cheers
