I have a chance to buy a 1953 D6 for $1500. I'm a complete newbie to dozers and especially to one this old. It runs good, has track pad wear and the pony motor knocks from fuel leaking into the crankcase.

The current owner parks it on a hill and rolls it off to start it. Is this machine worth buying gor general farm use? Are parts available? Can the pony motor be bypassed for electric start?

I know this is a lot to ask. The price is delivered to the hill if my choice.
Sorry about the pic. It rotated on upload and I can't figure out why.

If it runs and pushes dirt, grab it up for that price. The pony engine on a D-6 is made for that series only and it's equivalent which would be an older Cat 12 grader or a stationary power unit. Parts are readily available. Look on the left side of the diesel engine under the pony engine and check to see if there is a cover plate with three studs. That would be where the electric starter would bolt up if you decided to go direct start.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Factory direct electric start option became available in 1955.
Earlier models require boring the flywheel housing.

Hi, TnMike.
Looks pretty good from 10,000-plus miles away. If you can locate the serial #s, they will tell more accurately the build year of the machine. If engine and tractor serial #s match, you have the original engine. Serial #s can be found on the left rear of the steering clutch case, just above and a little inboard of the top of the drawbar swing frame mount and on the left side rear of the engine, just above the starter pinion housing aft of the pony motor.

Does this photo look better?

That issue with photos turning themselves around upon uploading apparently only affects photos taken with some phones and has to do with how the phone is held when taking the photo.

Just my 0.02.

I remember seeing a plate where you engage the pony motor with a lever on the left side below the pony motor. I don't have a picture.
Could that be it? How do you date the dozer?

From what the owner said the pony motor runs, it just knocks bad and he stopped trying to use it.

Hi TnMike.
The serial # plates are small rectangular aluminum plates rivetted to the engine block and the rear left of the steering clutch case. If either plate is missing, the serial # was also stamped into the parent metal underneath. Yours should start of with either 8U or 9U and have four or five numbers following. It may also have 1, 2 or more letters after the numbers if it had any special equipment installed at the factory. The most commonly used letters were SP for Special Parts.

Hope this helps.

For $1500 delivered, even my wife would let that sit in our lawn!
Like said by others, Pony parts are available.
Get some sort of starting system that is reliable for it.
One day you will stall it and it won't be on a hill!

Looks and sounds like a money pit. If you have some heavy work, stumps/trees to clear or heavy dozing I would pass it up and find a healthier tractor but for just farting around the yard it might live. Its up too you.
