My 6 has sat for about 2 years went to start by pulling ,pony issues and wanted to take to shop a work on pony. Would not start when pulling white smoke coming out breather along with the oil in it. Could exhaust valves be stuck? If so how would you go about fixing.

Thanks

Shift the reverser lever the opposite way! You are spinning the engine backwards!

I should know........

Note, 5th gear is forward ONLY it doesn't matter which way you have the reverser shifter positioned so you cannot pull it backwards to start in 5th. You can in 4th though. In 1-4, the reverser lever is pushed to the front for reverse and pulled back toward the seat for forward.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Always tow start forward. in reverse puts a hell of a load on the reverse idler and top gear needs least effort, Yes, I know its easier blade to blade, but not so easy on the machines.

I would look to all the regular none prime or lost prime starting problems. Because they will start and run in the opposite direction.

Not hard to tell, as it pushes oil out of the air cleaner. Don't ask how I know.

Be glad it didn't start. They don't run to good with lube oil pump pumping in the wrong direction.

As far as I can tell no damages,as it was some years ago by now. I try to be good and not coast start but a noon after the oil has been warmed and spread all around. Turned backwards only a matter of seconds. I am sure I had a very perplexed look on my face as I looked at oil boiling out on my boots. But several seconds latter knew what happened and shut it down.

All the hills it can get very tempting to coast start a lot of the time, specially when the pony wants to be difficult. But had a neighbor that was known to coast start all of his crawler all the time get pitched off and run over at 70 + years old. Gives me reason to try and be more careful.

I was flagging at the antique tractor pull a few years ago-a guy with a 70 Diesel John Deere hooked up & (almost) killed it trying to get the sled moving. He tried it again & it backed up against the front of the sled...he was totally confused, trying to find a gear that would make it go forward. didn't even look up to see the oil puking out of the air cleaner stack...I finally ran up & told him "Shut it off Calvin, it's running backwards!" He was like DUH huh? but finally did kill it. The crowd loved it...😆
