If its been there a long time and had sealer on it I would try JB weld and check for leakage. Had a frost crack on an engine block once and JB weld lasted a long time.
Whatever the sealer was I peeled it right off with a putty knife.
If its weldable...I think I will bribe KoO with cheezewhiz.
He could weld it in about 2 sandwiches time or less.
Thanks Chris
Well, you got your lump of coal for Christmas.....sorry to hear that but it's not all that uncommon, seems they either bust out on the RH side or on the bottom if not running a skid pan. No freezing required.
I'm pretty certain the case is cast iron. I keep a spare case on hand here. From what I've heard they don't take to well to welding repairs due to the stresses involved. I'd look for another trans or case and at least do a reseal and gaskets in the process.
So, you had to go bragging huh!!!!!! that'l learn ya.
Well I won't whine too much about the crack.
I did buy the crawler for 1000 bucks after all and drove it on the trailer after you helped me get it going.
I have to check my Buddy Billies shop he may have the case, I know he has the internals resting in oil filled drums.
Could be messy, ha ha. But might as well do it proper.
Regards Chris
Might try lock-n-stitch

The welding process that may work on this transmission case would be to vee out the crack by grinding. Then stick weld with nickel rod.
Requires a lot of patience by the person doing the welding. You have to keep the casting basically at room temperature. Only welding very short welds and waiting in-between welds, keeping the casting cool.
There is no guarantee that more cracks will not develop alongside the original crack.
There may be other specialty rods that would replace the nickel rod. Low temperature is the key.
ss, I have a good D68U transmission for sale.
Hey SnowShoveler,
Not to step on Oil Slicks toes, but a gent in Petaluma is scraping a 9u. I know the tranny is there. I don't know the condition. If you want me to check it out PM me.-glen
I tried to edit my profile to say I live in Nova Scotia...A little to far to ship economically.
If I can find a case at my buddies I will swap it out.
If no case available local....might bubblegum it.
Regards Chris
