I have the seat off of my 1958 D6. The left steering brake was sticking and the pedal would not return. It turned out that the pivot shaft inside the brake housing was sticking in the outboard casting. After trying every penetrating snake oil known to man I finally worked it free using a gun bore cleaning aerosol. I suspect that brake lining dust was putting the brakes on the shaft.

Since I have the seat removed I'd like to top off the steering clutch booster fluid. I'm 2 hours from the Cat and all my manuals are with the tractor. Can anybody tell me what fluid is used so that I can pick some up and take it back with me?

Many thanks!
Craig

Craig,

We run straight 30 weight motor oil in ours. There is a small square headed plug on the back of the booster housing, that is the level plug, when oil starts to run out that plug your full, assuming the tractor is on level ground.
You could probably run 15/40 in there without to much difficulty. I dont have my service manual in front me. Likley someone else will weigh in on the subject.

Cheers,
Woody

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
