Hello Gang,

working on a D69U #704x I picked up over the holidays. Hasn't run in a few years. The diesel wants kick but just won't. A few guys suggested checking the rack. I spent the last few days checking the wifes pretty close and trying to eyeball as many others as I could, and then I realized they meant the one on the tractor. Sure enough the rail was frozen. I worked some kroil into it and it moves pretty free one way now. Is there a return spring or does fuel pressure when running force it back? Is there someplace else I should check / lube?

Thanks in advance

Rick

The rack is controlled by by the gov. spring, the fly weights and the hand throttle up by the operator. You could have an inj. pump that.s tight in the bore in the pump from rust or setting for a long spell.Pull the throttle on and then see if you can force the rack back by hand with the side cover off the inj. housing where the pumps are. Work the throttle off and on and see if the rack travels free by watching it through the side plate (cover) hole.On later engines but not yours there is a rack limiter that only lets the rack travel far enough to let the engine start till it gets oil pressure up and then gets out of the way so then you have full travel of it.

Thanks! I will do just that.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
