Last year I rebuilt the head on my D6 9U. It ran great but after about two hours of working, a couple of the injectors started leaking. I tightened them down and ran it some more and they started leaking plus a couple more began leaking. I have them cranked down so tight that I don't want to tighten them anymore. I was thinking about buying the eastwood flaring tool and making my own lines. Has anyone done this? Thanks

I guess you have looked at the lines, but the end isn't a flare, more of a ferrule, and the line isn't common tubing, a LOT thicker. I have had some ends get crushed while tightening and then retightening. We just replaced the lines.

There should be plenty of D318 lines out there or may even be available new.

I have a Ford Dorsett diesel engine which has a slip-on ferrule on one of the lines where it attaches to the top of the injector pump and it seems to work fine. That SIMMS injector has a lot higher operating pressure than the old PC CAT's do!

I only noticed it when that line cracked about a few inches above the ferrule and nut. I brazed it back last year and it has worked so far. I wanted to be careful not to heat the line too much and melt the normal silver soldered/furnace brazed ferrule off the tubing, but it had already been replaced by the slip-on type.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Over the years working on Cats that ferrule will crack and there isn,t much you can do but install a new line. Take the line off and see if it has a crack parallel with the line as that,s the way they crack. Also seen the tapered tip of the ferrule flattened out or distorted from years of tightening them I guess.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
