This will probably take a couple of posts but at least it will be a start.
As usual, what appears to be a simple task turns out to have several variables.
There are lots of options to mounting alternators. Some things to be considered are:
1. Use the gear drive mounting.....requires the speed increase gear housing such as used on the higher output and 24V generators.
2. If going the belt drive route consider a double belt as there is not much wrap around the alternator pulley.
3. The belt drive option also gives the opportunity to machine new pulleys and get rid of the Cat adjustable pulley arrangement and use the alternator as a take up......don't forget to build in the attachment flange feature to the crank pulley if your running the #44 or #46 pump....or other front mount attachments.
4. If your going to be running an attachment such as AC you will want to consider driving the alternator and compressor through a modified gear drive arrangement.
There are several type alternator set ups offered out there...the good ones retain the cooling fan, have a flex coupling drive and retain the slotted flange for gear mesh adjustment. The junk ones have no fan, no flex coupling, may or may not have gear mesh adjustment and what looks like hand torch fabricated adapter plates and poor fit.
The two main sources of quality ready to mount gear drive alternators that I know of are the ones produced by:
American International Manufacturing
1230 Fortna Ave
Woodland, Ca.
916-666-2446
This unit uses a machined cast iron adapter housing, lovjoy coupling and usually has a 40 amp Motorola or Delco 10SI marine type alternator.
CME Arma Inc.
4500 NW 36th Ave.
Miami, Fl
305-633-1524
This unit uses a machined aluminum housing and I've only seen them with the Motorola alternator.
These units are not cheap.....around $400 but would certainly compete with the price of a Caterpillar alternator. I have no idea if individual components could be purchased.
And of course...some pictures.
