I have a D6 9U-Seriel #9U28590- that I have had for about 40 years. Recently I have found that the only gears that I can operate in are 1st and 2nd. The transmission shift lever won't move over to the 3rd/4th gear position. This doesn't bother me too much as 1st and 2nd are the only gears I use most of the time. I used to use 3rd sometimes when plowing snow. What has me concerned is that there might be some loose parts floating around down there that might get caught up in something and tear up the whole works. I haven't opened it up yet to look inside. Hoping to get some suggestions before I do. Has anyone experienced a similar situation and if so, have recommendations?

I'd first get the transmission side cover off and check the shift rails and detents.

Yes, sounds like one of the "gates" is out of position or more likely the shift fork has come loose from the rail. Could be loose or just sliding on the shift rail so it will not move the gears.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I was thinking more like one of the shift rail guides is stuck or frozen (lack of use) or one or more of the detents is stuck.

I had the same problem. The shifter boot had cracked and had let rainwater into mechanism, over time causing shifter to freeze up, so that you could only shift first and second. Remove boot, and you will most likely see the problem. Heat and lots of loose juice. Easy fix.

If doing what Doug says dose not fix it,the next place to look is the side cover and the detentes as OM was talking about.

Had one that jumped out of 1st gear, and a little loose juice and maybe a different spring fix it right up. At the time I was not hopeful about that little bit fixing it but that is all that it took.

OK. Thanks guys. I think I'll start with the easy solution first. Then, if that doesn't work, go into more detail.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
