It’s normal for the D6 8U steering clutch assembly to have different washer sizes on each side, especially on later tractors where Caterpillar revised the design—one side’s smaller washer (1A1450) intentionally leaves part of the thrust bearings exposed to allow grease to purge and prevent excess pressure from damaging the seals, while the other side’s larger washer acts as more of a shield. As long as the parts match the service manual for your serial range, the smaller washer isn’t a defect, and reinstalling it that way will ensure proper lubrication and longevity of the 6056 M bearings without trapping grease.
